Northern Illinois  20 MEGAWATTS

One of the largest projects of its kind in the world.

The 20-megawatt battery energy storage system in Northern Illinois is one of the largest of its kind in the world. The system provides frequency regulation support for customers of PJM Interconnection, the largest regional transmission organization in the United States.

The cutting-edge storage technology includes eight containers (10 feet by 40 feet in size), each housing 2.5-megawatt of LG Chem lithium-ion batteries. The system also incorporates four 5-megawatt ABB inverters and eight 2.5-megawatt ABB step-up transformers.

The project owner selected Blattner Energy as EPC contractor because of Blattner’s demonstrated expertise in project management and ability to power forward to take emerging technologies and challenging assignments from concept to completion.

As the EPC contractor, Blattner Energy was responsible for engineering the energy storage system, procuring the technology and equipment, the installation and interconnection of the system technology, as well as completing the testing and start-up activities.
